The Port & Company PC78 Core Fleece Crewneck Sweatshirt is the crewneck version of the same fabric that makes the popular PC78H Hoodie a wholesale workhorse.
The PC78 and PC78H share the same fabric, same fit philosophy, same color palette, and same decoration behavior. What differs is the neckline and why printers use one or the other in the first place. For many of our clients, crewnecks are the more versatile choice as they fit right in at a desk over a button-down, at a dinner out with friends, at a school open house talking to parents. Hoodies read more strictly casual: they're what you wear at the gym, at practice, on a chilly weekend at home. If your order is going out to a corporate audience, a professional-services team, older adults, or any context where the hoodie's athletic-casual connotation would be a mismatch, the crewneck might be your better choice. If, however, your order is going to a youth team, a college club, or a genuinely casual/athletic audience, the hoodie earns its slot. But we love both!
The PC78 is 7.8 oz/yd² of 50/50 cotton/polyester fleece. The 50/50 blend is worth understanding: it's more shrink-resistant than an all-cotton fleece (the polyester holds the shape through wash cycles) and less prone to pilling than a poly-heavy blend (the cotton keeps the surface soft). Air jet yarn is the specific yarn-spinning process that produces the softness and the pill resistance: air jet spinning uses compressed air to twist the fibers into a tighter, smoother yarn than the older open-end process, and that tighter yarn is why the fabric feels smoother in the hand and holds up better on the surface over time. The label is tear-away (though the style is transitioning between white and black tear-away labels, so an order may contain a mix, which is normal and not a defect). Adult sizing runs S through 4XL.
The PC78 is the crewneck anchor of a coordinated family, which makes it useful when a program wants matching pieces across silhouettes. The PC78H Adult Pullover Hoodie is the hood version in the same 7.8 oz fabric. The PC78ZH Adult Full-Zip Hoodie is the same fabric in a full-zip silhouette with a YKK metal zipper and self-fabric hood lining, for buyers who want the option to wear the piece open. The PC78Y Youth Core Fleece Crewneck mirrors the PC78 in youth sizing XS-XL, so a mixed-age order (kids and coaches, family gifts, camp counselors and campers) pairs cleanly across the age range. For the youth hoodie in the same fabric, the PC78YH Youth Pullover Hoodie is the youth pair to the PC78H.
One honest gap in the line worth flagging: Port & Company doesn't currently offer a women's-cut version of the PC78 crewneck. The LPC78H Women's Pullover Hoodie exists in the same 7.8 oz fabric with self-fabric lined hood and dyed-to-match drawcords, but there's no LPC78 (women's crewneck). For a mixed-team order that needs matching pieces, the workaround is either the LPC78H hoodie for women (which is a hoodie, not a crewneck), or ordering unisex PC78 crewnecks in smaller sizing for women wearers.
Port & Company sells two crewnecks in the same visual style but different fabric weights, and the choice between them is worth thinking through. The PC78 (this product) runs 7.8 oz, which the brand calls its "core weight." The PC90 Essential Fleece Crewneck runs 9 oz, which is heavier and more substantial. Interestingly, the PC90 is actually about $1 cheaper at MSRP than the PC78 despite being the heavier fabric. That's the Port & Company positioning: the PC78 is the "core weight" that hits a lighter, more versatile everyday feel; the PC90 is the "essential" heavier weight for cooler weather and buyers who want a beefier crewneck. Choose the PC78 for a corporate holiday gift or a fall program where the wearer will use it as an everyday layer. Choose the PC90 for a colder-climate program, a piece intended for genuine warmth, or a buyer who prefers the heavier hand feel.
The PC78 decorates cleanly across all common wholesale methods. The 50/50 fleece surface takes screen printing well with the air-jet yarn giving it a smooth-enough hand for detailed prints without ink distortion. Embroidery works cleanly on the left-chest and sleeve placements thanks to the stable 7.8 oz fabric weight. Heat-applied transfers (DTF, TPU, TPL) hold sharp edges on the fleece surface. For DTG specifically, the 50/50 blend isn't ideal (DTG performs best on 100% cotton substrates because the pretreatment relies on cotton fibers), so for DTG-heavy programs, a cotton-rich sweatshirt is a better substrate. One important caveat that's on the spec sheet: 50/50 cotton/polyester neon colorways require special care throughout the printing process. Neons are heat-sensitive and prone to dye migration, so your decorator needs to know if the order includes neons so they can adjust cure temperatures and ink selection. For standard color runs, no special considerations apply. (Want us to handle decoration? Send your logo for custom screen printing, embroidery, or DTF transfers.)
Depends on who's wearing it and where. The crewneck reads more grown-up and versatile: it works at a desk, on a dinner out, at a school event. The hoodie reads more casual-athletic: gym, practice, weekend at home. For a corporate holiday gift going to a professional-services company, choose the crewneck. For a youth sports team, choose the hoodie. For a mixed audience where you don't know exactly how it'll be worn, the crewneck is usually the safer choice because it works in more contexts.
Fabric weight. The PC78 is 7.8 oz "core weight," a lighter and more versatile feel. The PC90 is 9 oz "essential weight," heavier and more substantial. Same construction philosophy, same air-jet yarn, same 50/50 blend, but the PC78 is a lighter three-season crewneck and the PC90 is a beefier cool-weather piece. Interestingly, the PC90 is slightly cheaper at MSRP despite being the heavier fabric, which is Port & Company's pricing choice.
Not as a crewneck, honestly. Port & Company offers the LPC78H Women's Pullover Hoodie in the same 7.8 oz fabric with self-fabric hood lining and dyed-to-match drawcords, but there's no women's-cut crewneck (no LPC78) in the line. For a mixed-team order that needs matching crewnecks for men and women, the workaround is unisex PC78 sizing across the group, which reads more oversized on smaller frames.
Some, but less than an all-cotton fleece. The 50/50 polyester content stabilizes the dimensions, so shrinkage across the first wash is moderate rather than dramatic. Cold water wash and tumble dry on low or medium is the safest setting to preserve both fabric size and any printed decoration. The air-jet yarn also helps: the tighter yarn structure holds shape better through wash cycles than an open-end yarn fleece would.
It's a fair question, and the honest answer is that the PC78 is a workhorse blank that punches above its price tier without being a premium retail piece. At around $18 MSRP, it's meaningfully softer than budget crewnecks (thanks to the air-jet yarn) and sits at a comfortable "core weight" that reads as considered rather than skimpy. For most corporate gifting contexts (holiday gifts, company anniversary swag, thank-you giveaways), the PC78 is genuinely appropriate and represents good value. For premium corporate gifting where the recipient expects retail-quality (executive gifts, high-value client thank-yous), a heavier premium fleece like the Independent Trading IND4000 would be the step up.
