About the Richardson RA7400FZH

The hooded full-zip version of Richardson's Barrage wind shell adds the head and neck coverage athletes need when warm-up turns into actual cold. The 5-ounce 94/6 polyester/spandex shell delivers the same 4-way stretch and DWR water resistance as the rest of the Barrage line, with a three-piece hood that holds its shape and gives real coverage rather than collapsing flat against the back.

Re: the three-piece hood, cheaper hoods use a single panel of fabric that wads up against the neck and doesn't often sit right when worn. A three-piece hood adds a top crown panel between two side panels, which produces a hood that holds its shape over the head and frames the face cleanly. The full-zip front lets athletes vent quickly when they heat up mid-warm-up or zip all the way up to seal in warmth on a cold sideline. Combined with the elastic waist pullers, the jacket dials in from loose to fitted depending on the conditions. The smooth poly/spandex shell decorates well with heat transfer and embroidery, and the silicone Richardson logo on the left sleeve sits flat without interfering with team graphics.

For warmer training days when the hood is overkill, the Richardson Barrage Wind Shirt RA7400SSQ is the no-hood, side-zip pullover version of this same shell. To complete the warm-up kit, the matching Richardson Barrage Stretch Woven Training Short RA7401B uses the same 94/6 polyester/spandex fabric. For a cross-brand alternative, the Sport-Tek JST73 Hooded Raglan Jacket is another lightweight hooded jacket built for athletic use.

FAQ

What's the practical difference between a wind jacket and a soft shell?
Wind jackets are lighter, more packable, and built primarily to block wind chill. The 5-ounce stretch shell on the RA7400FZH is meant to be carried and thrown on for warm-up, cool-down, or sideline use. Soft shells are typically heavier, often bonded with a fleece backing for warmth, and built to function as a primary outer layer in cold conditions. Wind jackets pack down small enough to fit in a gym bag, while soft shells generally don't.

Why does the three-piece hood matter for team programs?
Two-piece hoods (a single panel sewn at the back seam) tend to collapse flat against the wearer's back and look sloppy in team photos. The three-piece construction holds shape over the head and produces a cleaner form in marketing imagery, recruiting materials, and team apparel listings. For programs that care about how their athletes look in gear, this construction detail matters.

Can the DWR finish be reapplied after it wears off?
Yes. DWR coatings gradually break down through use and washing, especially when exposed to heavy detergent, fabric softener, or repeated abrasion at high-contact areas like cuffs and shoulders. The simplest way to know when it needs attention is the bead test: spray water on a clean, dry garment. If water beads and rolls off, the DWR is still working. If the fabric darkens with wet splotches and absorbs the water, it's time to refresh. Many DWR finishes can be reactivated just by tumble drying the clean garment on low heat. When that no longer works, a spray-on or wash-in DWR treatment from any outdoor retailer restores the original water-repellent performance.

Will heat transfer logos crack across the stretch fabric?
Quality heat transfers and DTF prints applied with proper temperature and pressure hold up well on poly/spandex blends. The 6% spandex content is moderate enough that decoration adheres properly without flexing past the print's tolerance. Issues typically come from cheaper transfers, undertemping the press, or insufficient pressure rather than the fabric itself.
