The Independent Trading Co. IND4000 Heavyweight Hooded Sweatshirt is one of ITC's heavyweight fleeces and, in our opinion, one of the few wholesale blanks that truly, honestly competes with premium fleece retailing for much higher prices. Some quick specs: first, it's 10 oz of 70/30 ring-spun cotton/polyester with a 100% cotton face, double-needle split-stitch seams, a fleece-lined hood, nickel eyelets, and twill neck tape. Second, it looks and feels like a $70 hoodie. Give it a try! At bulkthreads we always offer free returns!

What "heavyweight" actually means here

The IND4000 runs a sturdy 10 oz/yd² (16.7 oz/L yd), which is tangibly heavier than the standard wholesale fleece tier (the Gildan G185 and Port & Company PC78H sit at 8 oz and 7.8 oz respectively). That extra weight produces the thick, structured feel and the substantial touch heavyweight lovers are searching for.  It's also the reason the a fleece like this holds its shape better than, say, a 5 oz hoodie designed for layering.

The fabric of the IND4000 is a 70/30 ring-spun cotton/polyester blend with a 3-end fleece construction and a 100% cotton face at 32 singles on the solids and houndstooth. What on earth does that mean? In practical terms: the outside surface is pure cotton (so it looks and feels like cotton, takes ink like cotton, and embroiders like cotton), while the interior brushed fleece adds the polyester for shape retention and pill resistance. That 100% cotton face is the thing that separates the IND4000 from cheaper poly-heavy fleece, which tends to look plasticky when not done well. Camo colors shift to 75/25 cotton/poly, heathers to 52/48 cotton/poly, and safety colors to 52/48 cotton/poly with a 65/35 poly/cotton face. The shifts are normal for those color types and don't meaningfully change print behavior, but it's worth knowing if you're ordering across the palette.

The construction details that matter

It's pricey, we know, but the IND4000's pricing comes from details that don't show up on cheaper wholesale fleece. The hood is fleece-lined, which adds genuine warmth and a more finished interior feel than the unlined hoods on commodity blanks. Split-stitch double-needle sewing on all seams means the major seams are stitched twice with the stitch line split to reduce break-through, which is what keeps the material from giving out at the shoulders and hood seams after heavy wear. The eyelets at the hood drawcord are nickel rather than plastic, which may be a small thing visually but it adds a real durability difference (plastic eyelets crack and fall out; nickel eyelets last the life of the garment). Twill neck tape covers the back-of-neck seam and gives the interior that retail-finished look kids these days are dying for. The 1x1 ribbing at cuffs and waistband uses a tighter knit than the body fabric to hold its shape. And the fit is generous, sitting toward the relaxed-and-roomy end of fleece silhouettes rather than slim.

One detail for those who, like us, appreciate sustainability: the IND4000 is made in a WRAP-certified facility, which is the Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production certification for socially conscious manufacturing.

Decoration

The IND4000's 100% cotton face is what makes it great for decoratng, and it's worth saying out loud: cheaper poly-heavy heavyweight fleece can be a challenge to print, so the IND4000 doesn't have that problem. Screen-printed plastisol and water-based inks bond cleanly to the cotton surface, and the heavyweight body absorbs the print without pulling or distortion. For embroidery, the substantial 10 oz fabric is exactly what hooped designs want, and the structured surface holds left-chest logos, back yokes, and chenille patches without sagging. DTG also works on the IND4000 thanks to the cotton face, though the heavyweight construction means longer pretreatment dry times than a 4 oz tee.

The IND4000 family

The IND4000 anchors a coordinated heavyweight line. The IND4000Z Heavyweight Full-Zip Hoodie uses the same 10 oz 70/30 fabric in a full-zip silhouette with a #5 nickel kissing zipper, for programs that want the option to wear it open. The IND3000 Heavyweight Crewneck brings the same fabric and construction into a hoodless crewneck. Running the three together (pullover hoodie, full-zip, crewneck) gives a complete heavyweight set across one decoration setup.

If you want a step heavier than the IND4000, the IND5000P Legend Premium Heavyweight Cross-Grain Hoodie sits at 13.5 oz with a cross-grain construction (yarns running in alternating directions for added stability and structure). It's the heaviest, most substantial hoodie in the ITC lineup and the closest wholesale blank to a true gym/heritage-weight fleece. The IND4000 is the right pick for most heavyweight programs; the IND5000P is the pick when even 10 oz isn't enough.

Questions buyers ask

How does the IND4000 compare to a Gildan G185 hoodie?

Different tier of product. The Gildan G185 is 8 oz of 50/50 cotton/poly with air-jet yarn, built for high-volume budget decoration. The IND4000 is 10 oz of 70/30 ring-spun cotton/poly with a 100% cotton face, premium construction details (fleece-lined hood, nickel eyelets, twill neck tape, double-needle split-stitch seams), and a noticeably heavier hand. The G185 wins on lowest unit price and broadest color depth at scale. The IND4000 wins on every aspect of construction, hand feel, and finished-product quality. The right call depends on whether the program is optimizing for cost-per-unit or for end-customer experience.

Is the 100% cotton face actually different from a "cotton-blend" hoodie?

Yes, and it's the construction detail most worth understanding. The IND4000 uses a 3-end fleece where the outer face yarn is 100% cotton, even though the overall fabric blend is 70/30 cotton/poly. So the surface you see, touch, and print on is pure cotton, while the interior brushed fleece carries the polyester for stretch resistance and pill control. On a generic 70/30 blend without a cotton face, the polyester yarns are interspersed on the surface, which produces a slightly plasticky look and worse print results. The cotton face is the small construction choice that produces most of the IND4000's retail-quality feel.

What's a "generous fit"?

ITC describes the IND4000's fit as generous, which translates to a relaxed, slightly oversized silhouette rather than a slim or fitted hoodie. For lifestyle and streetwear programs, that's the intended look. For programs where wearers prefer a closer fit, the call is either to size down one or to look at a slimmer-cut hoodie in the ITC lineup like the IND40RP Raglan.

Is the IND4000 sustainably made?

The IND4000 meets ITC's Sustainable Style criteria under the Socially Conscious Manufacturing subcategory: it's produced in a facility that's WRAP-certified (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production), which is the apparel industry's primary certification for ethical, safe, and lawful production conditions. For programs where supply-chain credentials matter, the WRAP certification is the IND4000's primary social-responsibility credential.

How does the IND4000 stack up against the IND5000P Legend?

The IND5000P is the step-up product. It runs 13.5 oz versus the IND4000's 10 oz, uses a cross-grain construction (alternating yarn direction for added structure), and is the heaviest, most substantial fleece in the ITC catalog. It's the call when the program wants gym-weight or heritage-weight fleece and the IND4000's 10 oz still isn't enough. The IND4000 is the right pick for the broader heavyweight market and sits at a more accessible price; the IND5000P is the premium tier above it.
